Duct Tape
A factory worker asked for stronger tape to keep rain out of ammunition boxes. Soldiers found a hundred other uses first.
In 1943, Vesta Stoudt stood on a munitions line in Illinois, inspecting boxes of rifle grenade cartridges. Each box was sealed with paper tape, then dipped in wax. A soldier under fire had to find the thin paper tab, pull it, and hope it did not tear. She had two sons in the Navy. She kept picturing the tab tearing, the rain getting in, the box refusing to open. So she designed something better and wrote to the President about it.

The problem was ordinary and lethal. Ammunition boxes needed to be waterproof in transit and instantly openable in combat. Paper tape and wax did the first job and failed the second. Stoudt sketched a cloth tape, strong and waterproof, that a man could grip and rip open without tools. She took the idea to her supervisors at the plant. They were polite. Nothing happened. On February 10, 1943, she wrote directly to Franklin Roosevelt, described the flaw, and included her drawings. The War Production Board looked at it and agreed with her.
Johnson and Johnson got the assignment. The company already made surgical adhesive tapes, so its engineers adapted that technology to Stoudt's specification: a cloth backing, a rubber based adhesive, a waterproof coating. Industrial Tape Corporation was directed to mass produce it. The result was drab green, wide, and remarkably tough. It sealed ammunition cases exactly as intended. Then it shipped overseas by the mile, and the soldiers got hold of it.
Nobody had briefed them on the intended use. They saw a roll of strong waterproof tape and started solving whatever was in front of them. Torn jeeps. Cracked windows. Split boots. Broken radio housings. Loose gun stocks. The tape held under rain and heat, and it came off without special tools. A product designed for one seal on one kind of box became the thing you reached for when anything broke. The ammunition job was still there. It just stopped being the point.
After the war, the tape came home with the men who had used it. It turned silver, found its way onto heating ducts, and picked up a new name. Then it left the ducts too. It went to the workbench, the boat, the school theater, the toolbox under the sink. In 1970, it went to the Moon and back when Apollo 13 needed a filter fitted where no filter belonged.
Stoudt asked for a better seal. The world took the roll and never gave it back.
