How Instruction Language Decides Who Gets Heard

A student can carry a full conversation in math class, hand up, correcting herself, asking sharp questions. In the next lesson, taught in a language she’s still learning, the same student goes quiet for the whole period. Nothing about her understanding changed. What changed was the language the lesson traveled in.

Most people have felt a version of this: a conversation in a second language where the thought was ready but the words weren’t. In a classroom, that gap does something bigger than cause discomfort. It quietly decides who gets to show what they know.


A Classroom Goes Quiet

Hands that were up every few minutes go down and stay down. Answers shrink to one word, then to a nod.

What happens next matters more than the silence itself. A teacher who reads the quiet as a knowledge gap tends to respond by simplifying the content: easier problems, fewer steps, lower expectations. A teacher who reads it as a language of instruction issue, meaning the language the lesson is actually delivered in, responds by supporting the words instead.

One response lowers the ceiling on what a child is asked to think about. The other keeps the thinking intact and repairs the channel it travels through.

Why Language and Content Get Confused

A student working out why ice floats has to hold the idea and the vocabulary at once: density, mass, volume. If the vocabulary is still new, the effort spent decoding words comes out of the effort left over for reasoning.

Assessment tightens the knot. Most tests ask students to show scientific understanding through language, so a shaky sentence can read as a shaky concept. Two separate skills get scored as one:

  • Content mastery: does the student understand the idea?

  • Language fluency: can the student express it in the test language?

  • What the grade usually records: a single number that blends both


What the Evidence Actually Shows

Research on this question is neither thin nor unanimous, which is what makes it useful.

A 2023 systematic review found that teaching in students’ mother tongue improved letter knowledge, word reading, sentence reading, and reading comprehension in that first language1. The same review reported gains in literacy in the national language too, along with oral language, reading comprehension, and writing in a language learned later.

A 2025 review of multilingual teaching methods found that the most prominent cognitive benefit was simple access: students could reach the curriculum content in the first place2. On the human side, a related 2025 review found the most frequently reported outcome was self-efficacy, a student’s belief that they can do the work, followed by engagement and identity affirmation3.

Achievement data points the same direction in some systems. A 2024 study using international test results from Emirati primary students found that children taught math and science in English had lower odds of reaching higher achievement scores than peers taught in Arabic4.

For a general reader, this means the language on the whiteboard is a variable in the score, sitting alongside effort and teaching quality.


The Case Against a Single Rule

The evidence doesn’t hand anyone a universal policy.

A 2024 study of English-medium instruction found the English-taught group performed better and concluded that, in that setting, English did not compromise learning of the academic content5. A 2025 study of partial-immersion multilingual schooling found children in the multilingual program had significantly better metalinguistic awareness, meaning the ability to think about how language itself works, along with stronger English6.

So the honest reading is about conditions, not slogans. Teacher training, materials in the right language, how gradually the switch happens, and how much support surrounds it all shape the result.

Running parallel language tracks also costs something real: staffing, scheduling, printed materials, and time teachers don’t have. UNESCO’s recent multilingual education guidance keeps this question near the center of debates about foundational literacy because the tradeoffs are genuine, not rhetorical.


What a Small Fix Looks Like

The practical version is smaller than a curriculum overhaul. It often starts with vocabulary bridges: introducing new terms in the language a student already thinks in, then attaching the instruction-language term to the idea once the idea is secure.

A workable progression for a single unit might run like this:

  1. Name the concept in the strongest language the student has.
  2. Attach the instruction-language word to that now-familiar idea.
  3. Ask the student to use both words for one week before assessing only in the instruction language.

Parents have a version of this too. Asking a teacher how new science vocabulary gets introduced, and in which language, is a more specific question than asking how a child is doing. It tends to get a more specific answer.

For most students, the foundation for later mastery is a few words handled carefully, not a different school.

Classroom silence is worth treating as information rather than a verdict. It may be telling teachers which language the thinking is happening in, and which one is blocking the door.
