A tenth grader raises her hand during a unit on career planning. Her question isn’t about the worksheet. She wants to know whether the job listed on it will still exist by the time she graduates. The teacher pauses. There’s no answer in the lesson plan, and the question is sharper than anything on the page.
That pause is worth sitting with. A student who asks whether a future job will hold has already done something harder than filling in a blank: she’s noticed the assignment carries a hidden assumption. Teaching students to spot those assumptions on purpose, and to ask about them out loud, is the idea behind futures literacy, a practiced skill for imagining more than one version of what comes next.
A Classroom Question Reframed
Futures literacy means holding two or three possible tomorrows in mind instead of one, then letting that comparison change the questions a student asks today.
It sounds abstract until it lands in an ordinary lesson.
A history class that asks what happened starts asking what else could have happened, and why that path closed. A science class that asks how a system works starts asking what would break it. Neither question is exotic. Both require the student to name a hidden assumption before answering it.
Researchers describing futures literacy education put the aim plainly: it helps learners “question assumptions, explore alternative courses of action and assess their potential consequences”1. Those three moves, taken together, separate a student who repeats an answer from one who interrogates the question.
Why Anticipation Is a Practical Skill
Adults tend to treat this as a soft, philosophical exercise.
Students experience it as a practical one, because the plans they make at fifteen have to survive contact with a world that keeps rearranging itself.
A single rigid script causes trouble. A student who has picked exactly one career path, one university, one sequence of steps, has nothing to fall back on when a step disappears. A student who has rehearsed three plausible paths isn’t more optimistic. She’s simply less startled, and she recovers faster.
The skill travels beyond career planning, too. Deciding whether to take an unfamiliar elective, whether a part-time job is worth the hours, whether a friendship is heading somewhere good: each of these choices improves when a person can sketch more than one outcome before committing.
The Mechanics of Anticipation
The method behind this is more concrete than the vocabulary suggests.
UNESCO’s Futures Literacy Laboratory approach, a structured workshop format for practicing this kind of thinking, moves through four stages: reveal, reframe, rethink, and act2. Stripped of the terminology, those stages ask a person to state what they currently assume, question where that assumption came from, build an alternative, and decide what to do differently.
In a classroom, the sequence can fit inside a single period:
- Write down one thing you assume will stay the same about this topic.
- Name where that assumption came from: a habit, a headline, a parent, a textbook.
- Sketch two futures where the assumption turns out to be wrong.
- Ask what you’d need to know to tell which future you’re actually in.
Step four is where the questions get good. Predictions end a conversation. A question about what evidence would distinguish one path from another opens several.
What Classroom Studies Have Looked At
The research base here is young and mostly small in scale, which is worth saying honestly rather than dressing up.
Still, the studies that exist point in a consistent direction.
One classroom study looked at students working through a course on visioning the city of the future, examining how that work supported their systems thinking, the ability to see how parts of a problem pull on each other3. Housing, transit, water, jobs: a student can’t redesign one without disturbing the others. The future city exercise worked less as a prediction game and more as a device for making those connections visible.
UNESCO has continued to support Futures Literacy Laboratories and a network of researchers and practitioners working across schools and communities. The durability of that network matters more than any single trial, because it means teachers adopting the approach aren’t improvising alone.
What the evidence doesn’t yet support is a claim about test scores or measured academic gains. The honest version is narrower and still useful: structured work with alternative futures gives students a repeatable way to surface what they’d been taking for granted.
A Practice That Fits in Five Minutes
None of this requires a special curriculum, a trained facilitator, or new materials. It just takes a piece of paper and a habit.
Before starting an assignment, a student can write one sentence: here’s what I’m assuming about how this turns out. Then she rewrites that sentence as a question beginning with “what if.” The rewritten question goes to class, or to the dinner table.
A worked example helps. Assumption: this essay topic has one accepted correct interpretation. Rewritten: what if two interpretations are both defensible, and the grade depends on which evidence I choose? The second version gives the student somewhere to go.
The exercise is small enough to survive a busy week. That’s exactly why it holds.
The tenth grader with her hand up wasn’t being difficult. She’d noticed that her worksheet was quietly betting on one version of the future, and she wanted to know whether the bet was sound. That instinct is teachable, and it takes about five minutes of practice before an assignment: name one assumption, turn it into a what if, carry it into the room. The worksheet still gets finished, but it stops being the ceiling of the conversation, and the student learns to read the question before she answers it.
