Yvon Chouinard's Most Radical Business Decision

2 min read

“Earth is now our only stakeholder.”

Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia announcement on company transfer to trust (2022)

Yvon Chouinard built Patagonia from a small climbing gear operation into a billion-dollar outdoor apparel company, and then, in 2022, he gave it away. Rather than selling or taking the company public, he transferred ownership to a specially designed trust and nonprofit dedicated to fighting climate change. The announcement was one of the most unusual acts in modern business history.

This quote came directly from that moment. Not a slogan, not a mission statement drafted by a committee, but a simple declaration of who the company now serves. Chouinard has long argued that businesses treating profit as their only purpose are part of the problem facing the planet. His own company became his answer to that argument.

What makes the words land so hard is their plainness. He did not say the environment matters, or that sustainability is a priority. He said Earth is the stakeholder, using the language of corporate ownership to flip corporate logic entirely. The planet is not a cause Patagonia supports. According to Chouinard, it is the owner.

For someone who once described himself as a reluctant businessman, this was perhaps the most businesslike thing he ever did. He structured a legal transfer, walked away from personal wealth estimated at three billion dollars, and let the paperwork speak as clearly as the words.
